To date, over 1.6 million Ugandans have died from HIV/AIDS, leaving 1.2 million
children orphaned by this devastating epidemic. Furthermore, another 1.2 million
are living with the disease, which includes 150,000 children.
Currently, just over 200,000 people in Uganda are receiving antiretroviral treatment
and less than 1/5 of the children who require treatment are receiving it. Uganda
was once widely hailed as Africa’s AIDS success story, however, it is feared HIV
prevalence may be rising again (UNAIDS, 2010)
